Extended use and reuse of Personal Protective Equipment – Health care workers

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is intended for single use. In a pandemic situation it is recommended to minimize the number of individuals who need to use PPE through preferential use of engineering and administrative controls.
Extended sessional use or limited reuse (by the same person) of PPE may be considered as contingency measures during an unexpected severe shortage. The decision on extended sessional use or limited reuse of PPE should be made by national and institutional authorities responsible for making such recommendations. In general, extended sessional use is preferred over re-use in order to reduce the risk of self-contamination from repeated donning and doffing of the same equipment.
