Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health and development threat. It is estimated that bacterial AMR was directly responsible for 1.27 million global deaths in 2019 and contributed to 4.95 million deaths. (1) In addition to death and disability, AMR has significant economic costs. The World Bank estimates that AMR could result in US$ 1 trillion additional healthcare costs by 2050, and US$ 1 trillion to US$ 3.4 trillion gross domestic product (GDP) losses per year by 2030 (2)

The Sri Lanka Sepsis Alliance (SLSA) was established in September 2023 with the endorsement of the Director General of Health Services (DGHS), the highest-ranking health official in Sri Lanka.

Typhoid fever is a potentially severe life-threatening bacteraemic illnesses caused by the bacteria Salmonella Typhi. Estimated 11–21 million cases of typhoid fever occur worldwide each year causing an estimated 135,000–230,000 deaths.

The Sri Lanka College of Microbiologists (SLCM) in collaboration with other professional colleges has organised a series of workshops aimed at increasing awareness on antimicrobial stewardship, implementation of the newly introduced antimicrobial prescription chart and AWaRe classification.
