Dr Enoka Korea was inducted as the President of Sri lanka College of Microbiologists on the 10th march 2015 at a ceremony held at at the Sri Lanka Foundation .
The speech introducing Dr Enoka Korea was delivered by Dr. Kanthi Nanayakkara ,( Consultant Virologist MRI Colombo and the outgoing president of the SLCOM ) .
Enoka Marie Corea, nee Perera; entered the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo in 1982, having completed her primary and secondary education at the Ladies’ College, Colombo. She obtained a First Class at her 2nd MBBS Examination with Distinctions in Physiology and Biochemistry and a Second Class Upper Division pass at Final MBBS Examination with a Distinction in Medicine.
Dr Corea joined the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo as a Lecturer in Microbiology in 1994. She obtained the Diploma in Medical Microbiology from the University of Colombo In 1996 and the MD in Medical Microbiology in 1999. She trained at the City Hospital NHS Trust in Birmingham U.K. from 2001 to 2003 and was board certified as a specialist in Medical Microbiology.
She was awarded the Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education of the Staff Development Centre, University of Colombo in 2001 with accreditation as a teacher in Higher Education from SEDA, U.K. and a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Dundee in 2007.
Dr. Corea has 22 years of experience in laboratory medicine and bacteriology diagnostic services and laboratory administration. She has over 20 years of experience in teaching medical undergraduates, postgraduate students and paramedical staff. She has rendered her services in different capacities in Postgraduate degree programmes such as the Diploma and MD in Medical Microbiology (including serving in the Board of Study), MD in Transfusion Medicine, Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate in Medical Education, Postgraduate Diploma in Molecular Medicine, Diploma in Family Medicine, Diploma in Reproductive Health, Postgraduate Diploma in Critical Care Medicine and Certificate in Basic Laboratory Sciences. She is a member of the Academic Committee of Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the University of Colombo and serves in the Board of Study of the MSc in Molecular and Cellular Immunology.
She is the Chairperson of the Ethics Review Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo and is a member of the Ethics Committee of the SLMA. She has served as a member of the advisory committee on Ethics, at the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
She is the Joint Editor of the Journal of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine and a member at the Editorial Board of the Sri Lankan Journal of Infectious Diseases.
She was the president of Section A of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) in the year 2010 and held the post of rapporteur for many years publishing a regular newsletter.
She has held the positions of committee member, treasurer, editor and joint secretary of the Sri Lanka College of Microbiologists.
She is the immediate Past President of the Sri Lanka Association for the Improvement of Higher Education effectiveness and has been the editor of the Allergy and Immunology Society of Sri Lanka since 2005.
She is a council member of the Sri Lankan Society for Microbiology and has served in numerous committees of the SLMA.
She delivered the prestigious SLMA oration in 2016
Dr. Corea has published numerous chapters in books and has over 20 publications in peer reviewed journals and over 50 communications, winning awards at national and international conferences.
She has received National Research Council and UGC grants to carry out her research activities. She has supervised many MD and MPhil students.
