Global Handwashing Day is an annual global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of hand washing as to prevent infectious diseases and save lives. It is celebrated annually on October 15 worldwide and it is an opportunity to encourage public and healthcare workers to wash their hands at critical times.

Although great strides have been made in many areas of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases, for example, in the prevention of many infectious diseases by vaccination, a number of challenges remain to be addressed. Sepsis is one of the leading causes of death in the world and continues to pose a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge with the fourth revision of the “Surviving Sepsis Campaign: International Guidelines for Management of Sepsis and Septic Shock” being published early this year. The theme of the Annual Scientific Sessions this year was “Combating sepsis”.
Hospital outbreaks of Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) have been described globally due to contaminated solutions and medical devices in different parts of the world while there have been no reported outbreaks of in Sri Lanka in the past.
